THE
ADVANTAGE OF THE CLASS D TECHNIQUE |
|
| Class D amplifier technology provides an amplifier circuit that is more efficient and waste less power. Conversely, in a class AB amplifier, the condition of maximum dissipation is often used for thermal dimensioning. The efficiency of a class AB amplifier is only 50%. Therefore, as much power is wasted in heat dissipation as is delivered to the speaker in a class AB amplifier. |
| |
In a class D amplifier the equivalent efficiency is around 90%. So, only 10% of the power is wasted in heat dissipation. Apart from the energy savings, the benefit of the higher efficiency of class D is that less heat is generated inside the amplifier, and bulky power packages and heatsinks can be eliminated. The advantages of Class D amplifiers are they provide greater power with less heat in a smaller package than a comparable class AB amplifier.
